Can You Make a Living as a Novelist?
Writing for a living and being a writer are not necessarily the same thing. You can be a very good writer and never make enough money for dinner down at the local burger joint. If you are considering writing for a living, there are a few simple things to bear in mind if you want to succeed.
I'm not going to talk about things like organizing your time, being disciplined, marketing, editing, etc. etc. There are lots of books and articles about all of that. I assume you will figure that part out if you're serious about writing. I want to point out a few, fundamental truths that apply to making money at it.
Anyone who writes for a living will tell you that there are days when you wonder why you ever thought you could put words on paper with the idea that anyone would want to read them, much less pay you for them. So here is truth number one...
YOU REALLY HAVE TO WANT TO WRITE
...followed by...
YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND YOUR ABILITY
Without these two things, you will fail. Becoming a successful writer (if you define success as earning a living at it) is the ultimate course in self-esteem. Rejection will be regularly served up, whether you are trying the traditional route or are self-published. If it isn't an agent turning down the umpteenth query you've sent out, it's the reader who thinks your work is crap and is eager to tell others about how bad it is. No one would put themselves through the process of letting others judge their writing in the marketplace unless they were anchored in these two truths.
There is one more fundamental that must be kept in mind:
YOU MUST WRITE LIKE A CHAMPION
Champions learn from their mistakes. Champions strive to improve their skills and do everything to the best of their ability. Champions look to other champions for ideas and advice. And finally, champions never quit, even when all seems lost.
Are you a champion?
