I was working at KKAA radio in Aberdeen, S.D. when I first was introduced to Lacy J. Dalton.

Oh, not literally introduced.  I’ve never met the lady.  But I’ve always felt you can get to know an artist through the songs they write and sing.

So then, in 1980 I was introduced to Lacy J. Dalton through her first major hit, ‘Hard Times’.  It kind of, I don’t know…put things into perspective.  If you haven’t heard it, I have a treat for you.  If you remember it, let’s enjoy it again.

It’s always hard to tell if a ‘new artist’ has staying power.  I’ve heard it said that, as hard as it is to make it to the top, it’s even harder to stay there.  So, would Lacy J. Dalton be a proverbial ‘One-Hit-Wonder‘?

Absolutely not.  With nearly 20 chart singles including several Top 10’s, Lacy J. Dalton was one of the biggest Country Star’s of the decade.  1981’s ‘Takin’ It Easy’ solidified her position in Country Music at the time, and has made her one of our favorites here at Classic Country KXRB.

But truth be known, my all-time favorite of Lacy is the one featured in the video at the top of this page, ’16th Avenue’ from 1982.  It’s one of those song’s (and there aren’t many) that I can listen to over and over all these many years later.

So…whatever happened to Lacy J. Dalton?

Well according to her official website http://www.lacyjdalton.com/ she’s recording new music!  At the age of 68, this Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania native is still writing, recording, and playing shows.  She lives in Nevada with her beloved dogs and horses.

Now that’s what I call great news!  Lacy J. Dalton has one of the most distinctive voices in the history of Country Music!

Because, as Hunter points out, God is unwilling that any should be lost. The misery is unbearable in Hell, and there is no chance of release. Step by step, Hunter shows the exact truth of a very real place... A place you do not want to go.

• Charlene originally recorded this in 1976, and it got to #97 in the American charts. Six years later, it was re-released after a Florida radio station started playing it to great public acclaim, by which time Charlene had moved to England and was working in an Ilford, Essex sweet shop. The re-release became a huge hit in England as well. (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England)
• The song was originally written from a male perspective but was rewritten by Ron Miller for Charlene. The use of the line "I've been to crying for unborn children" was not written about abortion. The line refers to a woman who is at a point in her life that she wished she had taken the time to have children.
• There are many misconceptions about this song. The spoken bridge in the song was not about or did it mention abortion - it was deemed too feminist and when Charlene's first album was re-released in 1977, the spoken bridge had been deleted. When the song became an unexpected hit in 1982 it was the version WITH the spoken bridge intact that was released. It has also been widely reported that the 1982 single was a re-recording, it is not. • Charlene was signed to Motown Records, but this was her only hit.
• When this song was first released in America in 1976, Charlene's full name was Charlene Duncan through her marriage to record producer Larry Duncan, but when the song was released for a second time in 1982, her name was then Charlene Oliver because of her marriage to Englishman Jeff Oliver. • This was used in the 1994 movie The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert.
• There have been several cover versions of this song by both male and female artists, including Nancy Wilson, Randy Crawford, The Temptations, Walter Jackson and Howard Keel.

Santino Nyang is one of the original “Lost Boys of Sudan” as accurately depicted in the movie, “The Good Lie”, starring Reese Witherspoon.  He now lives in Phoenix, AZ and works at the Fry’s Foods (a division of Kroger) near his home. At age 11 the North Sudanese Muslim Army raided his village killing raping the women, killing the men and any children they found.  They killed Santino’s father but his mother lived through that ordeal. Santino was sent to run into the jungle by his mother so he would live.  For four days he ran through the jungle coming across lions, tigers and snakes before he found another human, and that was his cousin.  They met thousands of others fleeing the Muslims all heading to safety in Ethiopia.   They had to keep hiding from the Muslim soldiers who patrolled the paths they had to take to get to Ethiopia.

After walking for 3 months and 1,000 miles they arrived in an Ethiopian refugee camp.  After 2 years there the U.N. sent them to southern Sudan, so they had to walk another 1,000 miles --- as a boy of only 13 – to another refugee camp in Kenya. 

In 2000 Santino and his cousin were relocated to Phoenix, Arizona where he became a U.S citizen in 2007, works at a Fry’s grocery store in NE Phoenix and is working toward a degree in Retail Management at Maricopa Community Colleges

In 2010 Santino went to Africa to visit his family and was very surprised when they announced to him they had found a bride for him and they were to get married on this visit.   Santino’s wife is very attached to her mother and was not ready to come to the U.S. but she is now ready to come with the children to be a complete family. 

Over the past few years, from subsequent visits to Africa Santino is now the very proud father of a 4-year-old boy and a girl who is nearly 2.  When he went to Africa for 2 months recently neither of his children left his side for a second … that is how much they miss him and need him.

With the rapidly growing spread of ISIS and other radical Muslims in Africa, Santino fears for the safety of his 2 beautiful, loving children and wants to bring them to the safety of the United States … HE NEEDS YOUR HELP.   He does not want them to have to flee to the jungle when the Muslim Soldiers decide to attack the village where his children live.
